Awards & Scholarships

Awards and Scholarships

The Canadian Group Psychotherapy Foundation (CGPF) aims to promote education, training, and research regarding group psychotherapy as an effective, economical, and transformative means of psychological treatment. Our funding model is based exclusively on donations. Over the years the Foundation has received generous donations from members of the Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association, CGPF and other interested individuals. These donations have allowed for the development of a scholarship program.

Since 2008, the Canadian Group Psychotherapy Foundation has supported four annual conference scholarships, each being tied to one of four important endowments. The scholarships are available to trainees in group psychotherapy as part of an academic degree program, or to early career practitioners (5 years or less) interested in further development of their group therapy skills. The scholarships are primarily oriented to support attendance at the annual Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association conference, but can be used to support attendance at other professional meetings so long as an educational experience regarding group psychotherapy practice is emphasized. The value of each scholarship is up to $500. The Martin Fischer Award is to reward outstanding students of group therapy training. The Jackson Award supports attendance at the American Group Psychotherapy Association Conference. In addition we have two awards, the Fern Cramer Azima and the Salvendy awards used to support practitioners by recognizing contributions to the field of group therapy. Please see further details under the appropriate tab above.

Applications will be reviewed in terms of the individual’s training background and work experience, and how the scholarship or award will be used towards group therapy competence development for self, or others if the award supports supervision or research. Regarding application reviews, a subcommittee of the Foundation will adjudicate all nominations and make recommendations to the Board of the Foundation, which will make the final decision(s).

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the review process; successful applicants will subsequently receive a letter and cheque from the Secretary of the Foundation.
